Health plays a very important role in a person’s life. It helps the individual realise his/her potential, and gives him/her the ability to fight against illness. A healthy person can work more effectively, and is more productive. If a person is not healthy, he/she will fall ill frequently, which will limit his/her capacity to perform well.

Health status is influenced by the social environment. For example, a person who doesn’t have easy access to grocery stores that sell healthy food is less likely to eat well, which increases their risk of acquiring chronic diseases and shortens their life expectancy. In addition to affecting the individual’s health, social circumstances can also influence a person’s happiness.

Physical and mental health have strong interrelationships. People with chronic illnesses can experience depression and stress, which may lead to a host of other problems. Mental illnesses can also have physical effects on a person’s weight and overall functioning. Thus, a person should strive to be healthy on the physical and mental levels, as well as the emotional and mental ones.

The World Health Organization defines health as complete physical, emotional, and social well-being. The goal of healthcare is to achieve this ideal state. Health costs approximately $3.5 trillion dollars in the U.S. in 2017, and American people have shorter life spans than people in other developed countries. This is partly due to the lack of access to quality healthcare and lifestyle choices. Maintaining good health is essential for dealing with stress and living a longer, more active life.
